When a tooth is decayed, if detected early enough, it can be restored. However, there are times when the decay becomes so deep that it affects the dental pulp, or nerve of the tooth irreversibly. In this case, a root canal or endodontic treatment is required. This is a procedure where the infected pulp is removed thereby removing the cause of pain and infection.
Following this initial process, further visits are required for continued cleaning, shaping and sterilisation of the root canal followed by filling of the canals and finally the tooth crown itself.
The treatment can take several appointments, depending on how complex the tooth is, and how long the infection takes to clear.
Subsequently a crown or a complex restoration to restore or protect the tooth may be necessary, as a tooth after undergoing such treatment may be more likely to fracture.
These procedures are all available and can be completed by your dentist at Unity Dental.
